When I heard about District Apizza (pronounced a-BEETZ), I saw the words “authentic” and “New Haven-style pizza” and was excited to try.
District Apizza provided a fresh experience with savory, wood-fired pie straight from the highly-acclaimed New Haven, Connecticut tradition.
New Haven-style pizza is much different from the numerous chain pizzerias scattered around Norfolk. Cooked at high temperatures with fresh ingredients, it has a distinct thin, charred crust.
Opened August of last year in the Railroad District of Norfolk, District Apizza is a modern, industrial restaurant with bright lights, metal chairs, and high bar stools.
On February 27th, I tried a couple items from the menu.
Arancini
Bigger than the typical bite-sized Italian street food, the regular order came with two of the stuffed arancini. Served in a layer of thick marinara at the bottom of a white bowl, these house-made fried risotto balls were crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside.

Spinach, Sausage, and Ricotta Pie
This was a great wood-fired pie. The pizza was thin, crispy, and covered in a generous amount of finely chopped and slightly spicy sausage, along with a refreshing layer of spinach. Overall the pizza was fresh with a savory flavor.
This New England-style pizzeria provided a fun atmosphere with amazing authentic Italian food that gave me a different take on pizza. I highly recommend it.
