Having eaten southern food from my Georgia family my whole life, I was skeptical about the Fishin Pig’s claim to be “a southern fusion” restaurant, but this modernized take on traditional BBQ was impressive.

The Fishin’ Pig provided excellent service and set the perfect backdrop for a delicious meal, creating a pleasant dining experience.

Placing first on Top 10 BEST Restaurants Near Norfolk, VA on Yelp, the Fishin’ Pig lives up to the hype. With bright pink and orange decor and excellent staff, the Fishin’ Pig is a welcoming restaurant, that opened in Norfolk, Virginia in June of 2021.

On January 16, 2024, I visited the Fishin’ Pig and tried a few items from their menu.

The Catfish

I ordered the Pork & Catfish served on a metal sheet with brown paper. The catfish was fried in Shorty’s mild breading, which gave it a strong crunch and a salty kick. It was served with a cilantro dill remoulade sauce that gave a fresh flavor that didn’t overpower the fish.

The Pork

The pork was bland by itself, but on the table were an assortment of sauces, and I tried two out of three. The sweet Memphis sauce had a thicker consistency than the others so I tried that first, and I wasn’t disappointed. It reminded me of when my dad grills in the summer. Then I moved on to the spicy Texas sauce, which engulfed me in straight heat, but it provided no flavor.

The Sides

I tried the Cindy’s Mac-n-Cheese and substituted the slaw with tater tots as recommended by the server (who had an amazing talent for writing her name upside down). The tater tots were fresh and blazing hot, and they were fried in a similar batter as the catfish. After eating the tater tots, I was excited to try the mac-n-cheese, but it was mostly just a lump of cheddar and overcooked elbow pasta.

Overall I really enjoyed my meal, the vibes, and the amazing food; along with the amazing customer service. The Fishin’ Pig gave me a memorable experience.
