Maury High School boys basketball has started their season with a new coach and two convincing victories.
New Head Coach Darren Sanderlin’s leadership has resulted in two victories by large margins to start the 2024-2025 season this weekend.
On Friday, Maury played Booker T. Washington High School and beat them 86-20, a deficit of 66 points. Then they defeated Petersburg High School 84-49, a deficit of 35 points, on Saturday.
Strong perimeter play was a common theme in both games, especially with Maury’s 12 3-pointers against Petersburg.
However, Coach Sanderlin said chemistry, unselfish play, and senior guard Adrean “Baby A” Newton’s leadership are the main reasons for the early dominance.
To Sanderlin, numbers are not a priority.
“I don’t even look at the stats,” Sanderlin said. “I only look at one stat, and that’s the W.”
On Saturday against Petersburg, Malachi Roberts, freshman guard, scored 25 points, including five 3-pointers. Newton scored 17 points, including three 3-pointers, and dished eight assists. Zachari Owens, senior forward, also contributed 16 points with two 3-pointers.
Maury is now 2-0. They play against Norview High School at home on Dec. 11.
