Maury High School’s boys basketball team won their second game in as many days on Saturday.
After beating Churchland in Portsmouth on Friday, Maury defeated Nansemond 70-61 in Newport News Saturday, overcoming their defense with free throws and prolific scoring from senior forward Zachari Owens.
Nansemond pressed hard for most of the game, making life difficult for the Commodores.
However, Maury held the lead thanks in large part to a stellar performance by senior forward Zachari Owens who scored 11 of his 29 points in the fourth quarter.
However, Owens did not win by himself. Maury as a team shot 14 of 22 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter to secure the victory.
Maury is 4-1 on the season. They will play against Granby High School at home Dec. 18.
