Maury girls take the Eastern Region top spot after routing Lake Taylor

After defeating Lake Taylor Friday night, Maury girls basketball has moved up in the rankings.

The Maury girls basketball team has climbed to first in the region after defeating Lake Taylor 35-28.

Last season, the Maury Commodores fifth in the region according to MaxPreps.com, but after starting the season with an eight-game win streak and earning a perfect record in region play, they are now on top of the list.

Head Coach Julius Owens expressed excitement, but not satisfaction, with his team. He stressed “staying humble” as a key to victory.

“Everyone has worked hard to get this point, but there is still room for improvement,” said Owens. “Discipline is the key for us right now.”

Against Lake Taylor, junior forward Sarajane Walker led the Commodores with 10 points. Seniors Camori Veal and Myla Parker contributed six points each.

The Commodores are now 9-1 this season. They will play against Manor, the second-ranked team in the region, Jan.15.
