Maury’s boys basketball team fought through a tough week of basketball before falling to a strong opponent.
After defeating two challenging opponents in Manor and Norcom Wednesday and Friday, Maury fell to ranked South Lakes on Saturday, with sophomore guard Tabren Hawkins filling up the scorecard.
Against Manor, Maury weathered a 21-point first half by Jaylyn Ballard before holding him to five points in the second half and winning 85-72. Sophomore guard Tabren Hawkins scored 16 in the effort.
Against Norcom, Hawkins led the Commodores with 14 points while the team decisively won 55-39.
Maury lost to South Lakes(ranked #9 in the state by Sports Illustrated) due in large part to the 6-foot-8 Jordan Scott’s 19 points(11-of-12 from the free throw line) and 13 rebounds, despite Maury forcing him to turn it over seven times and shoot only 3-of-9 from the field.
Hawkins nearly matched Scott’s scoring output with 18 points, shooting 4-of-5 from three, but the Commodores went down 52-64.
The Commodores are now 10-3 this season. They will play Booker T. Washington at home on Wednesday Jan. 22.
