Maury boys basketball took a loss Saturday afternoon.

After a close first half, Woodside defeated Maury 63-45 for the regional championship in Booker T. Washington’s gym on Saturday.

Both teams played stifling defense in the first half, and both teams fought to earn every basket, leading to a 25-20 lead for Woodside at the half.

Woodside’s  size advantage was not a factor in offense. Senior Jayvion Green and Junior Jake Guinn played strong defense against the 6-foot-8 Silas Barskdale and held him to seven points. Green also outscored Barskdale with 11 points.

However, Woodside’s perimeter shooting and defense overwhelmed the Commodores. They made ten 3-pointers to Maury’s seven, and their backcourt scored 52 points to Maury’s 23.

Senior guard Adrean “Baby A” Newton led Maury with 12 points, mostly by attacking the basket. Sophomore guard Callen Morrison led Woodside, and all scorers, with 16 points and four 3-pointers.

The playmaking and slashing by Woodside’s senior point guard Masiah Stevens also hurt Maury. He scored 10 points and facilitated many of Woodside’s 3-pointers.

Due to advancing to the regional finals, the Commodores made the state tournament. They will play against Green Run on March 4 at Green Run High School.
