Maury High School overcame Bishop McNamara High School 38-35 on Friday, September 12.
Maury’s defense was the key to victory, along with clutch scoring, leading to a triple-overtime win.
The Commodores stopped the run, excluding a couple of big plays made by Bishop McNamara’s sophomore running back Joshua Gorham. They held Bishop McNamara to only 21 points in regulation, allowing all the later points once the drives started from the 10-yard line. They also pressured the quarterback throughout the game, recording three sacks in total.
Maury’s senior cornerback Hunter Collins intercepted Bishop McNamara as well.
Offensively, Maury’s quarterback Domo Everette ran for three touchdowns in the game and threw one touchdown despite Bishop McNamara’s stifling pass defense.
Self-inflicted wounds hurt both teams. Maury had penalties negating touchdowns, as well as a miscommunication on a handoff resulting in a fumble recovered by Bishop McNamara. Bishop McNamara also had a penalty that took a touchdown off the board, as well as one that moved an overtime PAT back.
The game ended in the third overtime after both teams had successfully scored on each of their first two drives. On Bishop McNamara’s third drive, Maury held them to fourth down when they elected to kick a field goal. It was blocked by Maury, giving them the ball in a tie game. All they needed was one point to win.
Maury followed that with a four-play drive. On fourth down, they sent out senior kicker Charlie McCoy for the game-winning kick from the seven-yard line. He made the kick, sealing the victory.
The Commodores are currently 2-1 and ranked second in the state, according to MaxPreps.
Maury will play the undefeated (ranked 55th) Churchland at home on Friday, September 26.
