On September 26, Maury High School defeated Churchland High School at Old Dominion’s Powhatan field 77-6.
The Commodores secured the win through their stifling defense, efficient passing, and persistent running.
Jeffrey Fawcett, team statistician and Maury history teacher, said the X-factor for this season’s team is “speed,” and the Commodores showed that speed Friday night on the defensive end. Sophomores Joshua Thomas and Elijah King recorded a sack each. Senior cornerback Hunter Collins recorded his second interception in two games.
Erik Schenke, Maury freshman, attended the game and mentioned “the quarterback” as a significant factor for Friday night’s victory. Sophomore quarterback Dominick (Domo) Everette led the offense, passing for 304 yards through the air and seven passing touchdowns.
Sophomore backup quarterback Trequan Duke subbed in during the fourth quarter and led two scoring possessions while throwing for a touchdown and running for one himself.
Senior wide receiver Jahvon Wiggins and junior Tayshawn Branche both scored three times each. Branche scored two rushing touchdowns in the game.
The Maury Commodores are now 3-1 and ranked second in the state, according to MaxPreps. They will take on the 0-3 Booker T. Washington High School next Friday, October 3.
