When it rains it floods in Norfolk

By Moriah Schranz

If you stepped outside the weekend of October 11, you probably got wet. The weather forecast consisted of cloudy skies, and downpours.

Norfolk and other parts of the Mid-Atlantic region were swept by a nor’easter that caused significant flooding to the area.

Norfolk is susceptible to tidal and storm surge flooding due to its location along the coast and low elevation. The rising sea level makes this worse and leads to heavy damage from storms such as this October nor’easter.

The storm flooded many neighborhoods. Granby senior and Larchmont resident Wilder Lewis even paddle boarded through the street this past weekend. His actions caught the attention of 13 News Now.

“My friend and I were stuck because of the flooding,” Sadler said. “So we started catching the wake from the cars on Hampton to surf around.”

The flooding left lasting effects on some streets in Norfolk. Sadler said he had a hard time getting to school on Tuesday.

“A few streets were flooded, so it was pretty hard to get across the Granby Street Bridge,” Sadler remarked.  “A couple neighborhoods were very hard to get out of. I would have canceled school because it would be hard to get there.”

Students at Maury face similar problems.

Senior Adelaide Page also lives in Larchmont and experienced the flooding.

“We had to move our car because the streets were flooded,” Page said.

Page, however, said that she had no problem getting to school.

“The streets were pretty clear by Tuesday.”

Colonial Place, a peninsula Norfolk neighborhood on the Lafayette river, usually experiences severe flooding during storms.

Senior Zinnia Wilson, a Colonial Place resident, shared her experience with the flooding.

“It wasn’t terrible but it was definitely a hassle to navigate around,” Wilson said. “It almost made me late for field hockey practice on Tuesday because two of the streets I tried to get out of the neighborhood were flooded over.”

There is still over a month until hurricane season is over, so the flooding issue may reappear this year. Whether or not it was the right call to continue school this past Tuesday, students definitely had to work their way around the weather.
