The Maury High School Commodores obliterated their cross-town rivals, the Granby High School Comets, 64-0 on November 7.
Maury took them down with their persistent defense and potent scoring.
Starting with the defense, Maury recorded five sacks, an interception, and a forced and then recovered fumble. The list of players that recorded sacks includes: senior Isaiah McDaniel, senior Jacoby Marshall, freshman Kamari Watson, sophomore Raymond Sloan, junior Elijah King and senior Isaiah “Ike” Simmons with a joint tackle.
Freshman corner and receiver Tajuan Pair grabbed an interception and Jacoby Marshall forced a fumble that was recovered by junior Samuel Woods.
On offense, the Commodores had another outstanding night scoring eight touchdowns. Six of those touchdowns came through the air from standout sophomore quarterback Dominick Everette, with all but one going to a different receiver. Four of the touchdowns were caught by Tajuan Pair, senior Damon McDaniel, and juniors Matt Williams and Jahvon Wiggins respectively. Senior Elijah Moss grabbed two touchdowns by himself.
Tayshawn Branche also had an amazing night running through people the whole game for two touchdowns.
The Maury special teams also made a difference highlighted by a punt return touchdown. They also made quite the impression on the Comet returners, burying them deep in their own territory and causing them to call fair catches on kickoffs.
The 9-1 Maury Commodores will take on the 4-6 Woodside High School on Friday, November 14, in the first round of the playoffs.
