The Lady Commodores conquered Churchland Wednesday night.
With a stifling team defense and timely shots, the Maury girls basketball team defeated Churchland 62-31.
Maury Head Coach Julius Owens said they won “because of our defense and toughness!”
The numbers support Coach Owens’ claim. Churchland’s highest scorer, Jordan Corbin, had 12 on the night, but the rest of Churchland’s players scored no more than four points and made no more than two field goals.
Maury also forced turnovers, at times not even allowing fast breaks. Guards Zoey Redel and Samyra Mills harassed Churchland’s back court and passing lanes all night.
On offense, Lamari Budd led all scorers with 21 points, including a pair of and-one plays. Nyla Brown scored 13 and Zyonna Mosley scored 11.
Maury will play against Granby at Granby High School Friday, Dec. 12.
